Sebastian storms to British F4 championship lead in season opener

After a long winter, this weekend saw the British F4 grid take to the track for the season opener at Brands Hatch. Sebastian Alvarez certainly made his title intentions known as he earned a maiden victory and a hat-trick of podiums, kicking off his championship campaign in style.

Returning to the F4 paddock with the Double R Racing team, Sebastian was in great form from the first turn of a wheel, lighting up the timing screens in morning practice, he ended the day second fastest, just 0.043 seconds shy of the top spot ahead of the weekend action.

With confidence and a strong winter training schedule behind him, Sebastian went from strength to strength, tackling the 1.2-mile Indy Circuit for qualifying on Saturday he was firmly in the fight for pole position. Trading times as the session ran on, the top four were separated by less than a second, Sebastian settling for 3rd on the grid for Race 1, but with consistent pace he scored pole for the final race on Sunday afternoon.

With storming speed, Sebastian rocketed to take the lead when Race 1 began, opening himself an advantage of two seconds by the end of lap three. But with Browning gaining on him and benefitting from better grip, Sebastian settled for second place at the flag. Earning his first outright podium in the championship.

Although heavy fog delayed racing on Sunday, Sebastian wasn’t deterred, starting from fifth on the damp grid, he soon picked his way through the pack when racing resumed in Race 2. Keeping his cool throughout a chaotic race, Sebastian crossed the line in third, but was later promoted to 2nd following a post-race exclusion for Browning. Taking to podium alongside his team-mate, the pair headed up Double R Racing’s first 1-2 of the year.

Bolstered by a strong start to the weekend and 2 sets of shiny silverware to his name, Sebastian geared up for the final race with his eyes firmly on the top step. Lining up on pole position, he set the power down as the lights went out and sealed the lead as the pack headed into the first turn. From there, he showcased his increasing talent, to hold off the charge from Maloney behind, putting his car in all the right places to keep his rival at bay. Leading lights-to-flag, Sebastian earned his maiden victory in style, claiming the fastest lap honours along the way.

Praising Sebastian’s formidable form, Director of Infinity Sports Management, Gary Catt said:

“It was a great start to the season for Seb at Brands Hatch. He has put a lot of work in over the winter and made big improvements on and off the track.
It was the first weekend of what will be a long season, so now it’s important for him to keep working hard and continue improving throughout the year and try to stay at the front.”

Following a hat-trick of podium appearances, Sebastian now leads the championship by 15 points, as racing heads to Donington Park on 27th-28th April.
